Hamell On Trial
Irish Tour 2004
Hamell's like Billy Bragg with a bad attitude, or more
accurately Bill Hicks wielding his guitar like a scythe - The Independent.
"He has a tender side too, with songs of love and survival among the rants, but there's no descending into sickly syrup for this anti-folkster - everything's ultra-real and loud and scarily funny. A Hamell show is the most life-affirming of experiences in its darkness, humour, raw vitality and passion - both energising and cathartic. This man's not mad, he's a genius" - Time Out.
Support on all dates comes from JINX LENNON, the acclaimed gospel punk, acoustic warrior from Dundalk. Jinx's most famous song 'Get the Guards' has become a clarion call on national radio and he should prove a worthy support act to Hamell's fiery stage presence.

On his latest album—the first on Righteous Babe Records—Ed Hamell captures the frenetic energy of his live act in a carefully crafted recording which also stands on its own. The result is an excellent introduction to an artist whose work defies easy categorization. This time around, Hamell’s primarily solo act is fleshed out with guest appearances by Ani DiFranco (whose voice and guitar are featured throughout, most notably on the duet “All That Was Said”), Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley), Ernie Brooks (Modern Lovers), and Jonathan Kane (Swans). He’s also got behind-the-scenes help from the likes of veterans John Leckie (Radiohead, John Lennon, George Harrison), Phil Nicolo (The Rolling Stones, Cypress Hill, Sly and Robbie), Ani D, and Andrew “Goat” Gilchrist (Drums & Tuba) as producers.

Hamell On Trial is a one man punk band. Wielding his acoustic guitar like a machine gun and tossing words and ideas around like grenades, Hamell is a high-intensity performer with a fast mind and a sharp tongue. He writes and sings songs about sex, love, politics, near death experiences, God, drug dealers, road trips, and just about everything that enters his brain. On his latest album - the first on Righteous Babe - his primarily solo act is fleshed out with guest appearances by Ani DiFranco, Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley), Ernie Brooks (Modern Lovers), and Jonathan Kane (Swans), and he's got behind the scenes help from the likes of Ani DiFranco, John Leckie (Radiohead, John Lennon, George Harrison), and Phil Nicolo (The Rolling Stones, Cypress Hill, Sly and Robbie). Tough Love comes on strong, but its heart is tender and its aim is true.
