‘Pump It Up’ has been ‘THE’ summer party anthem for hordes of holiday makers this year after it was hammered in all of the Mediterranean hot spots from Portugal and Spain to Greece , Italy , Israel and Turkey! Resort bars and clubs and the local radio stations have played the track all summer long!!
It’s the biggest pan-European dance hit of summer 2004; selling over 220,000 copies in France and going top 10 in Italy, Denmark, Belgium, Greece and Russia. In Italy alone - a two month long national TV advertising campaign with Pringles has lead to over one million people owning CD copies of the track. Commercial releases in Germany and America (where it’s already been added to hugely influential radio station KTU in New York are now set to follow!
Judge Jules has been the first to respond to the European action spinning the Gladiator re-mix for the past month on his Radio 1 show. During this time it’s gone down a storm with commercial DJ’s throughout the country whilst leaping to #3 on the Cool Cuts chart. The Video has gone straight on the playlist at the Box & Kiss TV channels (6 weeks upfront) as well as being added MTV Dance and MTV UK’s TRL!
An infectious club favourite, “Pump It UP” is a combination of the ‘Black and White Brothers' euro hit 'Pump It Up' with the seminal 1990 house classic Mixmaster's 'In The Mix'. Danzel himself, a finalist in last years Belgium Pop Idol is a truly larger than life character and has been completing promo throughout Europe and the US for the last 6 months. Released on the 25th of October it’s shaping up to be this autumns biggest Pop/dance crossover hit, so in the words of the great man himself, “You’ve Got To Pump It Up , Don’t you know pump it up !”

Waem, aka Danzel, was one of the final 20 contestants of the Belgian version
of Idol (called Idool 2003). "Idol" is a worldwide spread television
show which tries to determine who is the country’s hottest, new
musical talent.
Three thousand youngsters participated and only 20 were selected for the
big final. Danzel was one of those lucky twenty. It was his chance to
show the world what he was capable of.
And, his performance did not stay unnoticed: he proved to have a very
remarkable, soulful voice and an enticing personality. The down-to-earth
chap with spiky hair and blue glasses left a very good impression. Not
in the least on the ladies, we might add. No wonder that he reached the
finals.
Johan has always been interested in singing. He has been playing music
for years and was one of the members of band Scherp op de Snee, in which
he sang and played the bass guitar. Apart from that he has been a backing
singer for the L.A. Band, which does a lot of gigs with many famous Belgian
musicians. But, Johan does more: he plays the piano and guitar, and, being
an all round musician and entertainer, he also composes and writes his
own lyrics. By the way, did you know he worked as a DJ-entertainer in
a karaoke bar? Well, that is where he developed his excellent MC-skills…
Idool 2003 gave Johan
the chance to dedicate his life to music and record his debut-single ‘Pump
it up’. He used the artist name Danzel, a name which refers to Johan’s
favourite actor: Denzel Washington.
‘Pump it up’ is a remake of a song by the Black and White
brothers, who had a big hit in the nineties with ‘Put Your Hands
Up’. Danzel’s remake was released at the end of 2003, only
on 300 copies. A limited edition on yellow vinyl. People reacted very
enthusiastically. The record was picked up by Airplay Records (France)
and The Underdog Project producers (DJ Frank and Andy Janssens, also the
producer of Kate Ryan) complimented Danzel on his version. The videoclip
for the song was shot in a striptease club downtown Ghent. The ladies
in the video are all regular clients of the hip Culture Club, which is
- according to the Britisch Sunday Times Magazine – ‘the coolest
place on earth’. On the annual music fair Midem (Cannes, France
– last week of January) Danzel was licensed to the rest of Europe
and some other, far away countries (eg. South Africa will release Danzel’s
work). At the Midem Closing Party the famous French DJ Charles Schillings
– who played after Pete Tong – played ‘Pump it Up’
two times during his set.
That's how it all began !
Now 'Pump It Up' is a massive hit in France, Belgium and the rest of Europe
is following. The first full album of Danzel will be ready in 2 weeks...
